I regret not going sooner to the ranch, truly an only in LA experience, and if you're brave enough, go with bizarre_los_angeles and you tell me if you also heard the noose creaking from the rafters. It is both tranquil and utterly Lynchian after dark up there.

There are other ghost stories, of course-the stable boy and the rich girl, standard riding accidents, the deaths from the nearby old quarry, and then there's the inherent eerie stillness of the hills. I found myself outside in the fog, listening to the horses. The staff is wonderful, the horses (many of whom are rescues) are gorgeous and I liked hearing their quirks and personalities (I rode Marilyn, who was described as "beautiful, and all the horses are in love with her but she gets annoyed and wants to be left alone, she likes her space"- highly relatable, Marilyn) and it was a unique exhilaration to ride, under the Hollywood sign, watching the sun set over our city.Īfter dark, Craig gave a great historic overview of the area, and told the story of the riding instructor who died in the barn, before leading his paranormal crew in to catch the ghostly footsteps in the dark. But there's so much more to the ranch- horses were there before Hollywoodland was there. Of course I love Mulholland Drive, and the calm menacing cowboy scenes. Saturday was an overwhelming combination of elation, excited fear, eeriness and beauty, thanks to bizarre_los_angeles for my first visit to Sunset Ranch, something that was long overdue.
